At Stanford’s Center for Human Rights and International Justice, we invest in the future by working to equip the new generation of leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect and promote human rights and dignity for all. From coursework to off-campus service-learning opportunities, students are at the core of everything we do, including the work of our Human Trafficking Data Lab. Our Lab is committed to fighting human trafficking through rigorous multidisciplinary research, close partnerships with frontline stakeholders, and large scale, research-driven policy interventions. For example, we are developing remote detection technology powered by AI neural networks that can accurately pinpoint zones in the Brazilian Amazon where illegal deforestation and forced labor likely converge in producing charcoal used in the steel supply chain. Piloted in collaboration with Brazilian authorities, this technology allows for a more proactive anti-trafficking intervention, moving beyond merely reactive, tip-driven initiatives.
